Purchase of Coriander:

Coriander is an aromatic herb. There are several kinds of Coriander, small leaf, and combined leaf (small and tiny).

Coriander Freshness:

When you take the bunch of grass in the supermarket, watch your stalks and leaves erect. Intense dark green leaves, with no yellowish or withered leaves, much less brown or viscous (rotten). Fresh and characteristic smell (not rotten smell). It can be found fresh or dry. The dry is kept at room temperature, in a cool and dry place. (see spices). When you go to buy the product in the supermarket, we recommend:

  • Observe that the display site is clean and adequately refrigerated.
  • Choose the products, preferably in this order: vegetables, fruits, eggs, cheeses and dairy in general, after the products of pantry, but before the meats, poultry, fish and shellfish.
  • When you reach your destination refrigerate, so that the “cold chain” of the same is not interrupted.


Coriander is used to give aroma and flavor to typical Latin dishes (beans, empanadas, Sancocho, etc.). -Also for soups, broths and salads, among others. -In the “Chimichurri” with parsley and oil for meats, “Pico de gallo” (Mexican food) and in the “minced or chili” with long onion, red pepper or chili and lemon juice or vinegar.

Coriander Storage:

Before storing cilantro,

  • Remove longer stems and roots.
  • Clean dirt and remove any yellow, brown or black (rotten) leaves if you have it.
  • Wrap in dry towel of absorbent paper for kitchen.
  • Store the herbs in a container preferably plastic and with a lid, not glass because they retain more moisture and rot and that is not tight.
  • or in deep container (jar) of plastic, with absorbent paper of kitchen (dry and folded) in the bottom of this.

Place the cilantro in bunch, standing, with the stems towards the bottom of the container (without roots) and insert all its arched branches. Place another paper before covering.

  • Coriander should not be so tight inside the bowl so that the air can circulate.
  • Periodically check the herbs to remove the damaged ones and remove the excess moisture from the lid.
  • When using, remove the entire branch or cut, without pulling, to not abuse the grass.
  • Refrigerated instead not so cold of the fridge (door).
  • Its duration also depends on its freshness at the time of the purchase.

  • When using fresh herbs, often check those remaining in the container, to remove leaves in poor condition and to dry excess moisture in the lid of the container to prevent them from rotting.
  • For typical broths and soups, the cilantro stalks and even the root (well washed) are better than the leaves to give flavor and aroma in cooking. Then they are taken out to serve and placed the chopped cilantro finely on them.
  • These stems are kept separately, clean and dry wrapped in absorbent paper (dry) and in plastic bag.
