Guava

Purchase:

The Guava or quince (Myrtáceas). It is a fruit originating in Spain and Portugal.

Freshness:

When it has not matured enough, its crust is green with yellow hues and small green freckles, firm to the touch. When maturing, it acquires a pale yellow color with small dark freckles and its texture yields a little more to the touch. Delicious characteristic Aroma, not to damaged or fermented fruit. It should not have bruises or soft brown parts or blows.

When you go to buy the product in the supermarket, we recommend:

  • Observe that the display site is clean and adequately refrigerated.
  • Choose the products, preferably in this order: vegetables, fruits, eggs, cheeses and dairy in general, after the products of pantry, but before the meats, poultry, fish and shellfish.
  • When you reach your destination refrigerate, so that the “cold chain” of the same is not interrupted.

Uses:

As an ingredient for juices, milkshakes, sorbets, ice creams, jellies, jams and sauces. -Also in preparation of cakes, biscuits and confectionery in general. -The guava sweet is well known and autochthonous of Colombia “sandwich”, accompanied with cheese is a delicious snack. In general this sweet is very consumed throughout Latin America. -In the “invoices” or biscuits, which are stuffed or covered with this sweet, in the Argentinean, Chilean, Colombian and Uruguayan cuisine. Serve this sweet with melted cheese on roast beef, in Mexico.

Storage:

Guavas are stored clean and dry in the refrigerator, in plastic bag with perforations or fruit box. They can also be peeled, split and sliced into plastic bags (according to the desired amount for each preparation) and frozen (although it changes its taste a little).

Conservation:

Freeze. Cool.

Duration:

1 month or more.  10-12 approx.

Tips

Never refrigerate or freeze without having reached the ideal ripening point, because it stops this and are hard and without juice (is what is commonly called “stunner”). It is advisable not to cook the fruit for drinks, since it loses nutrients in this process.

Nutrients and properties:

Guava, is one of the most nutritious fruits with high content in vitamins, especially in vitamin C (antioxidant) contains more than 3 times that lemon or orange and minerals such as potassium (diuretic). It contains carotenes and carbohydrates (natural fruit sugar, fructose) but in few quantities, making it perfect for diabetics. -Protects the skin. -Stimulates the immune system. -Guava leaves are used in tea to treat diabetes and also fruit juice. -Prevents and treats cardiovascular diseases. -Reduces bad cholesterol. -Helps reduce arterial hipertenión. -Against stress.
