Watermelon

Purchase:

The PIN or watermelon, belongs to the family of the cucurbits. It is a large-sized fruit, thick shell and red pulp with high water content, which is why it is excellent for quenching thirst on a sunny day.

Freshness:

If you are going to buy whole, the kind of smooth dark green crust watermelon (no coffee roughness) and round shape is usually the sweetest. There are also elongated, lighter green color and marbled. -If you are going to buy Porcionada, it must be of intense red color (not pale), these are almost always sweet. It must be firm, not soft, smooth crust without brown roughness. Firm pulp, no soft or undone parts. Fresh and delicious smell.

When you go to buy the product in the supermarket, we recommend:

  • Observe that the display site is clean and adequately refrigerated.
  • Choose the products, preferably in this order: vegetables, fruits, eggs, cheeses and dairy in general, after the products of pantry, but before the meats, poultry, fish and shellfish.
  • When you reach your destination refrigerate, so that the “cold chain” of the same is not interrupted.

Uses:

The Sideburn or watermelon can be consumed alone or in juices. In salads with other fruits or with some vegetables like spinach. Also as a decoration or base juice for cocktails.

Storage:

The watermelon, if it is somewhat sticky its crust or if it was not placed inside a bag in the supermarket (cashier handling), clean with clean damp cloth. Store at room temperature and when the desired ripening point is reached, refrigerate. -Start to slice by one end, cutting with shell what is going to be consumed. -Store the remaining facedown, in a bowl (bowl or place silicone cover or film paper) and refrigerate. -Continue cutting the portion to be consumed and keep the other in shell so that it continues to have good taste and freshness, without affecting the “cross contamination”.

Duration.

-Refrigerated, 2 days maximum after departure. -Consume as soon as possible, to take advantage of its freshness because it has short “useful life”. Its duration depends also on the freshness at the time of its purchase.

Note:
